Croma — SEO Audit & 90-Day Growth Strategy

A full organic-search audit of croma.com, an omnichannel Indian electronics retailer. We reviewed 88 keywords, 5 pages in depth, 15 technical checks, the backlink profile and local listings — then converted every finding into a prioritised, owner-assigned 90-day plan.

Executive Summary

Croma is a technically competent, high-authority site with a real weakness in how it performs for real users on mobile — and a set of cheap, high-return snippet and structured-data wins sitting completely unclaimed.

What we found

The critical problem

Mobile page experience is failing for real users. CrUX field data over a 28-day window returns a Failed Core Web Vitals assessment. Layout shift of 0.83 means content visibly jumps while people try to buy — a direct driver of misclicks and cart abandonment on a site where the majority of traffic is mobile. Everything else in this report is partly downstream of this.

The unclaimed upside

Seven of ten sampled pages have meta descriptions Google will truncate, and no Product / Offer / AggregateOffer schema was confirmed on product or campaign pages. That markup is what produces price and rating rich snippets — the highest-CTR elements in a SERP. For a price-led retailer this is the single cheapest competitive advantage available.

A note on our method. Several values in this audit could not be measured with the access we had — Google Search Console was not available, and croma.com returns HTTP 403 to automated crawlers. In every such case we recorded NOT VERIFIED and stated which tool would produce the real number, rather than estimating. You will see this repeatedly. It is deliberate.

PHASE 1Business & SEO Understanding

Before auditing anything, we established what the business is trying to achieve and which pages actually matter to it.

Business
Croma — a Tata Group brand
Website
https://www.croma.com/
Industry
Electronics retail & e-commerce
Business model
Omnichannel — online marketplace, 200+ physical stores, in-house Croma Labs service/repair, and the "Tribe by Croma" private-label range
Audience
Indian consumers buying consumer electronics and home appliances, online or in-store
Locations
Pan-India, with dense store coverage in metros
Primary objective
Sell consumer electronics and appliances
Conversion action
Online purchase, or an online action leading to a store purchase

The five pages we audited, and why

Page selection is a strategic decision, so we justified each one rather than picking arbitrarily.

PageTypeWhy it qualified
croma.com/HomepageBrand entry point; passes authority to all categories
…/sony-playstation-5-slim…/p/305985ProductRanks #2 for "ps5" (673K volume)

PHASE 2Keyword Research

88 keywords collected and — critically — filtered. Most teams present a raw keyword dump; the value here is in what we removed and why.

Category — usable

Genuine optimisation opportunities
Branded
23
Already position 1 — defend, don't chase
Local / Store
15
Local pack + "store near me" queries
Product-Model — excluded
18
Deliberately removed from the opportunity set
Why we excluded 18 high-volume keywords. Terms like "vivo t4x" (1.5M volume) and "iphone 16 pro" (823K) look like huge opportunities. We excluded them because a dedicated page per model is not a scalable SEO strategy, these terms decay the moment Croma changes its catalogue, and Croma already ranks for most of them. Building a roadmap on them would have been volume-chasing, not SEO.

Reading the Position column. "AI Overview" does not mean Croma ranks there — it means a Google AI answer occupies the top of the results and no organic URL was tracked at a fixed position. Across our tracked set this happened on 17 of 50 keywords. That is a coverage problem, not a ranking problem, and it is why 9 of the 10 keywords above show no numeric position.

PHASE 3Web Position Analysis

Ten high-value commercial keywords, each classified against a published rule so the prioritisation is defensible rather than subjective.

3
Defend these — refresh, internal links, CTR

Notably, Croma is not visible in the video or image packs on most of these. For an electronics retailer, product video is a genuine differentiator and competitors are using it. This is a secondary opportunity we have flagged rather than a headline recommendation.

PHASE 4Competitor Analysis

Three relevant organic competitors. We separated like-for-like peers from market-leader benchmarks, because comparing Croma to Amazon India on raw scale tells you nothing actionable.

CompetitorTypeOrganic traffic/mo AuthorityBacklinksRef. domains Content strategy

Amazon IndiaBENCHMARK197.9M 99269M196.6K Products + reviews + guides + deals + support

* Croma's headline backlink figures come from the dedicated Semrush Backlink Audit export (Phase 8), which is the authoritative source. Competitor figures come from the Domain Overview widget and are internally consistent with each other. The two are not mixed.

The actionable gap

Vijay Sales out-performs Croma on informational content. It ranks #1 for "dark spot on laptop screen" (201,000 volume) — a problem-solving query, not a product query. Croma competes well on transactional terms but loses the research phase of the customer journey, where shoppers are still deciding what to buy.

The commercial implication: a shopper researching a fault or a specification reaches a competitor, forms a preference there, and arrives at Croma already anchored to the other brand. Informational content is not a "nice to have" here — it is the top of the funnel.

PHASE 5On-Page SEO Audit

Five pages audited in depth against twelve on-page parameters. Croma's category pages are genuinely good — the failures are concentrated in metadata and structured data.

What Croma does well

  • Buying-guide content is real. Category pages carry genuine purchase guidance — screen size, BEE ratings, capacity, compatibility — not just product grids.
  • Heading hierarchy is sound on all four category pages (1× H1, logical H2/H3 nesting).
  • Internal linking is present and relevant — 91–131 internal links per category page connecting subcategories contextually, with zero broken links found.
  • Intent match is strong. Product listing plus buying information serves the commercial query well.

What needs work

  • No H1 on the homepage (0 H1, 10 H2) — a lost primary relevance signal on the highest-authority page on the site.
  • Every category page has a meta description Google will truncate.
  • Canonical targets are unverified — we could not read canonical tags from the public HTML, so absence cannot be concluded either way.
  • Cannibalisation risk is plausible but unproven. Broad and narrow category pages overlap semantically; only GSC query-to-URL data can confirm it.
Status vocabulary. PASS meets the check · NEEDS CHECK could not be confirmed without GSC or crawler data · FIXED a data error we found and corrected during review. We have not claimed a defect we could not evidence.

PHASE 6Technical SEO Audit

All 15 checks from the brief. 7 produced hard measured values; 8 require Google Search Console, a full crawler or a real-device test, and are recorded as unverified rather than guessed.

Our most interesting technical finding. Three steam-iron URLs — an evergreen page, a Summer Sale page and a Republic Day Sale page — currently display an identical 14-product set. Three URLs, one intent, split link equity. We are careful about how we state this: it is a measured inventory overlap, which is a near-duplicate indexing risk. It is not proof that every word on the pages is identical, and we do not claim it is.

PHASE 11Local SEO

Here our finding is the opposite of what clients usually expect: local SEO is not Croma's weak spot. Store pages exist, are indexed, and hold Local pack positions.

Listings needing fixes
33 / 35
Data hygiene problem, not a visibility problem
Local pack positions held
15

GBP phone
Incorrect
11 digits — does not match Indian numbering

Confirmed issues

  • Incorrect phone number on the Google Business Profile — reported as 091543 64079, which is 11 digits and does not match standard Indian numbering.
  • Incorrect address reported on one directory.
  • 33 of 35 listings need correction, with Bing, Facebook, Instagram and Siri reported as absent entirely.
  • Review data is internally inconsistent — a 4.9/5 rating is shown while the same report says "no reviews". Must be verified live before it is quoted to anyone.

Scope & honesty note

The supplied local listing report covers one store — Croma Tirupati. Croma operates 200+ stores. These findings are a single-store sample, not a site-wide verdict, and we present them that way.

Across our keyword set, 15 local/store queries resolve to store.croma.com URLs in Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Mysore — at position 1 or Local pack. The infrastructure works.

Recommended next step: repeat this listing check for five high-volume markets to convert a single-store sample into a representative local audit.

PHASE 17Client Challenge

The brief requires at least one challenge task. We completed Challenge 1: find five keywords ranking around positions 11–30 and explain how we would improve them.

Why positions 11–30? This is the striking distance band. The page already has relevance and usually impressions, so relatively small improvements produce a real jump onto page one. It is the highest return-on-effort band in SEO — and the hardest to fake.
KeywordPosVolumeRanking URL DiagnosisOur action
mobile11450K /vivo-v60-5g…/p/317382 Canonical + intent mismatch. A single Vivo V60 product page is ranking for a broad head term that belongs to the /mobile-phones/c/10 category hub. Self-referencing canonical on the PDP; strengthen breadcrumb links back to /mobile-phones/c/10; re-anchor internal links to the category hub.
video game19301K /gaming/c/7 Category dilution. The gaming hub sells laptops and accessories, not game software or discs. Different intent, different competitors. Dedicated sub-hub for game software; H2 for "Latest Video Games for PS5, PS4, Xbox & PC"; genre/platform facets.
ps5 price15165K /lp-playstation-5 No structured pricing. A static landing page with no Product or AggregateOffer markup, so no rich price snippets. Comparison pricing table above the fold; AggregateOffer schema (lowPrice, highPrice, priceCurrency: INR).
poco f714368K /unboxed/poco-f7-5g-launched-in-india Editorial page with no commercial path. An /unboxed/ launch post ranking for a product term, with no specs table, price or buy link. Insert a structured spec sheet (processor, camera, battery); embed a live buy card linking to the active POCO product page.
vivo store1190.5K /vivo-store/b/0795 No store locator, no brand markup. A brand filter page competing against official Vivo stores and Maps results. "Find a Croma Store with Vivo Experience Zone" widget; Organization and Brand schema linking Croma to verified Vivo dealership status.
The insight worth remembering. "mobile" at position 11 is not a content problem. A product page is outranking the category hub for a head term. That is fixed with a self-referencing canonical and internal anchors — a two-hour technical change, not a two-week content brief. Recognising that difference is the whole job.

PHASE 14Top 10 Recommendations

If the client does nothing else, they should do these ten things — in this order. Ranked by business impact × SEO impact, divided by effort. Every row cites a measurement.

1 CRITICAL6 HIGH 3 MEDIUM0 LOW — deliberately deferred
1
Mobile Core Web Vitals are failing CRITICAL

Why it matters

CrUX field data (28-day window, verified 26-Sep-2026) returns Core Web Vitals Assessment: FAILED for mobile. LCP 3.3s, INP 473ms, CLS 0.83. Croma is mobile-first, so this affects most sessions. A 0.83 CLS means content visibly jumps while people try to buy.

Recommended action

Mobile-first performance sprint. LCP: compress hero imagery to WebP/AVIF, lazy-load below-fold media, preconnect to CDN. CLS: reserve explicit width/height on banners, remove the render-blocking location modal. INP: defer third-party tracking scripts, code-split and minify JS. Re-test PSI after each release.

2
Meta descriptions exceed 155–160 characters on 7 of 10 sampled pages HIGH

Why it matters

Google truncates around 155–160 characters, so the tail never renders. Worst case /l/iphone-17-0auz05e.html at 244 characters. On an e-commerce site the description is a primary CTR lever.

Recommended action

Rewrite every affected description to ≤155 characters. Front-load the primary keyword and the commercial benefit, keep one clear CTA, and make each unique to its page.

3
No Product / Offer / AggregateOffer schema confirmed on product or campaign pages HIGH

Why it matters

This markup produces price, availability and rating rich snippets — the highest-CTR elements in a SERP. Croma competes on price-led products, so without it Croma cannot win the visual even at position 1.

Recommended action

Validate and implement Product, Offer and AggregateOffer (lowPrice, highPrice, priceCurrency: INR) on 5 product pages and 5 campaign landing pages via the Rich Results Test. Re-test after every template release.

4
Near-duplicate landing pages compete for the same intent (14/14 overlap) HIGH

Why it matters

Three steam-iron URLs — evergreen, Summer Sale, Republic Day Sale — expose an identical 14-product set. Duplicate inventory splits link equity and leaves Google to pick a winner arbitrarily.

Recommended action

Consolidate to one evergreen URL and 301 the campaign variants to it. Keep campaign URLs live only for their promotional window, then redirect.

5
Homepage has no H1 (0 H1, 10 H2) HIGH

Why it matters

The H1 is the clearest on-page statement of what a page is about and feeds title/snippet generation. A missing H1 on the site's highest-authority page is an avoidable loss of a primary relevance signal.

Recommended action

Add a single descriptive H1 to the homepage template and roll the pattern out to any category template missing one. Audit the top 20 URLs for H1 presence.

6
Local listing NAP errors on the audited store (33 of 35 listings) HIGH

Why it matters

An incorrect GBP phone number and an incorrect directory address weaken local trust and map visibility. Inconsistent Name/Address/Phone data is a direct local-ranking factor.

Recommended action

Define one approved NAP, correct the GBP phone and the incorrect directory address first, then work the remaining priority listings. Do not chase low-value directories.

7
robots.txt carries 32 Disallow directives, untested against revenue URLs HIGH

Why it matters

Any category or product URL accidentally matched by a Disallow pattern stops being crawled and cannot rank. The patterns are not wrong in principle, but none has been regression-tested against priority URLs.

Recommended action

Test every Disallow pattern against the top 50 category and PLP URLs and confirm none is blocked. Add this to the release checklist so template changes cannot silently block revenue pages.

8
Image alt text incomplete and unverified site-wide MEDIUM

Why it matters

1 image missing alt on the homepage (of 61) and 1 on each category page sampled. Product images are a large share of an e-commerce page's content, and alt text feeds both image search and accessibility.

Recommended action

Add descriptive alt to product and category images. Leave decorative images as alt="". Spot-check the top 100 product images for uniqueness — repeated identical alt text is itself a weak signal.

9
AI Overviews occupy the top of the SERP for 17 of 50 tracked keywords MEDIUM

Why it matters

An AI answer sits above the organic results, suppressing click-through on the highest-volume terms. Croma cannot out-rank the feature — but it can be the source it cites.

Recommended action

Restructure high-volume category and buying-guide pages into short, quotable answer blocks, add FAQPage schema where it fits, and tighten factual claims so an AI answer is likely to attribute them to Croma.

10
Diluted category intent: /gaming/c/7 ranks 19 for "video game" but sells laptops MEDIUM

Why it matters

Video game software and discs are a distinct intent with a different competitive set. A page mixing gaming laptops, accessories and software cannot satisfy any of them well.

Recommended action

Build a dedicated video-game sub-hub with platform and genre facets, add an H2 for "Latest Video Games for PS5, PS4, Xbox & PC", and internally link it from /gaming/c/7 with descriptive anchors.

Note on Phase 5 scope. The brief's checklist reads "audit 10 important pages". We completed 5 pages, each audited across all 12 on-page parameters in full depth — 60 measured data points. This scope of 5 pages was confirmed by our instructor. We would rather show five pages properly evidenced than ten superficially, and every unconfirmed value is labelled rather than guessed.
Workload split. Chandra carries the strategy spine — what the business needs, what to target, how the brand performs locally, and what to do in what order. Madavi owns authority and prioritisation: the backlink profile, the ranked Top 10, and the client-facing challenge that tests our own thinking. Jyothika owns everything that shows up in search results — the SERP, the competitors, the on-page surface, and internal linking. Reddy owns the technical layer single-handedly, including all 15 technical checks.
